What you can do with a digital certificate
- Submit tax returns, view tax records and receive official notifications from the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT).
- Check your employment history (vida laboral), register self-employment or request benefits with Social Security.
- Complete online immigration procedures, track application statuses, or file specific administrative applications.
- Sign legal documents and contracts electronically with certified validity.
- Access online portals of city councils, regional governments, Land Cadastre, Traffic Directorate (DGT), and Civil Registry.
Certificate types
The most common is for natural persons (individuals). To act on behalf of a company, a corporate representative certificate is required, subject to company registry verification. If you manage a Spanish company, we will advise on the correct certificate.
What it does not replace
A digital certificate does not replace procedures that inherently require physical presence (such as fingerprinting for a physical residence card or certain notary signings). Nor does it replace a NIE: it is an electronic authentication tool, not an identity document.
Electronic notifications
Once you hold a digital certificate, many public bodies switch to electronic notifications. It is crucial to monitor notification mailboxes regularly or grant power of attorney to your advisor to monitor them for you.
