Can I apply for the digital certificate without attending in person?

In certain cases, yes. The identity verification required for a digital certificate is normally done in person at a registration office, but in some cases it can be completed remotely — for example with an electronic DNI or by video identification. Why identity verification is mandatory

A digital certificate allows you to sign documents and complete official procedures with full legal validity; therefore, the issuing authority must reliably verify the applicant's identity. This verification is the only step that might require in-person attendance.

Verification methods

In person: at an authorized registry office (Tax Agency, Social Security, Town Halls, etc.), with prior appointment and ID document.
With electronic Spanish ID (DNIe): using an active DNIe and a smartcard reader, without traveling.
Video-identification: offered by some certifying authorities for natural persons, with specific technical and identification requirements.
From abroad: Spanish consular offices serve as authorized registration offices for selected certificate types.

Foreign citizens with NIE

If you hold a NIE number you can obtain a digital certificate. Required documents depend on whether you are an EU citizen or third-country national (residence card, EU registration certificate, or valid passport with the NIE certificate).
